DENVER ~ ### Polis receives flu and COVID-19 vaccines ahead of respiratory virus season

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis received his flu and COVID-19 vaccines at the State Capitol as the fall respiratory virus season begins.

Polis encouraged Coloradans to get vaccinated, saying the state has taken steps to make the shots easier to access. He noted that a statewide standing order was reissued to reduce barriers for people seeking vaccines.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment reissued the order on Sept. 4, 2026. It allows pharmacists to administer COVID-19 vaccines without an individual prescription and remains in effect.

"Getting vaccinated is a simple step Coloradans can take to help protect themselves and the people around them as we head into respiratory virus season," said department Executive Director Jill Hunsaker Ryan.

The department's chief medical officer, Dr. Ned Calonge, said flu and COVID-19 vaccines can lower the risk of severe illness. He also advised people to ask whether an RSV immunization is recommended for them.

Vaccines are available at local public health clinics, primary care offices and many pharmacies. The department's Find a Vaccine Provider webpage lists low- and no-cost options across Colorado, regardless of insurance status.
