~ Colorado Springs is expanding parking enforcement in its regional parks and open spaces, citing safety, access and environmental concerns.
The city said growing demand at trailheads and other popular access points has led to vehicles blocking gates and emergency routes, parking on curbs and using accessible spaces without proper credentials. Parking outside designated areas can also damage vegetation and contribute to erosion, according to the city.
Under a partnership between the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department and the Colorado Springs Police Department, park rangers will be authorized to issue parking citations across the regional park system. The police chief will appoint rangers who have completed required background checks, screening and training, the city said.

The city plans to begin with an education period to inform visitors about parking rules and the enforcement changes before full implementation later this fall.
"We appreciate everyone who does their part to care for our parks and open spaces," Regional Parks, Trails and Open Space Manager Scott Abbott said. He said responsible parking helps visitors enjoy the shared spaces.
The city encourages visitors to use designated parking spaces, follow posted signs, keep gates and emergency access routes clear, and display a valid disability placard or license plate when using accessible parking spaces.
