~ The Colorado Springs Police Department has notified residents that Vernon Eugene Stewart, whom Colorado courts have designated a Sexually Violent Predator, has moved to a new address in the city.
The department said Stewart is living at 3615 E. Uintah St., No. 7. It described him as an 83-year-old white man, 6 feet tall and weighing 255 pounds, with gray hair and hazel eyes. He is off supervision, according to the department.
Police said Stewart was convicted in 2004 in Grant County, Washington, of second-degree child molestation. In 2005, he was convicted in El Paso County, Colorado, of attempted sexual assault on a child. He violated parole in 2007, the department said.
As part of the legally required community notification, police said they informed the Colorado Department of Public Safety's Sex Offender Management Board notification team, contacted neighbors and businesses in the immediate area, and notified nearby law enforcement agencies. The department also said it reviewed and confirmed information about Stewart's residence, employment, vehicles, legal status and criminal history, and briefed patrol officers.

The department said it would make reasonable efforts to ensure Stewart registers as a sex offender and understands his responsibilities. It also said an online video explaining the notification process and providing community resources is available through the police section of coloradosprings.gov.
Stewart is one of 21 people designated as Sexually Violent Predators who are registered with the Colorado Springs Police Department and live in the community, according to the department.
Questions about the notification process can be directed to Detective J.R. Brown of the department's Registered Sex Offender Unit at 719-444-7672.
