FORT COLLINS ~ # CSU Opens Veterinary Hospital and Education Complex
Colorado State University has opened its Veterinary Hospital and Education Complex, a new facility intended to expand veterinary training and help address a nationwide shortage of animal-care professionals.
Gov. Jared Polis joined university leaders and students for the ribbon-cutting in Fort Collins. He said the complex would provide hands-on training and help graduate more veterinarians and Veterinary Professional Associates (VPAs).
The state provided $50 million for construction through HB 24-1231, signed by Polis in 2024. The legislation also supported changes to CSU's curriculum and a 20% increase in veterinary class sizes.

A year later, Polis signed HB 25-1285, establishing a framework for integrating VPAs into the veterinary workforce while setting protections for consumers and animal health and safety. The law formalized Proposition 129, approved by Colorado voters in 2024. CSU is the first university in the country to offer a complete VPA course of study, according to the governor's office.
Polis has also signed several animal-related measures in 2026. They include a ban on pet stores transferring ownership of dogs and cats; provisions allowing veterinarians to prescribe certain medications in-house and creating a donation program for unused pet medicines; and a measure recognizing the human-animal bond as a social determinant of health.
Other laws address housing access for people with assistance animals, animal welfare in educational programs, and safety standards for pet-care facilities.
