TELLER COUNTY ~ Colorado Gov. Jared Polis joined state wildlife officials, local leaders and Colorado Springs Utilities representatives to break ground on a new recreation area at Rosemont Reservoir in Teller County.

The site is expected to open as early as 2027, offering camping, paddling and picnicking near Pikes Peak. Plans call for 35 primitive campsites, five tent campsites, a boat ramp, vault toilets, a day-use area, a pavilion and a scenic overlook.

The project is a partnership between Colorado Parks and Wildlife and Colorado Springs Utilities. The agencies say the expansion is intended to increase access to outdoor recreation while protecting the watershed, natural resources and reservoir infrastructure.

"Coloradans will soon have a brand new place to camp, fish and paddle in the shadow of Pikes Peak," Polis said in a statement, adding that the project would help protect the watershed and wildlife.

Colorado Department of Natural Resources Executive Director Dan Gibbs said the project would provide families with more opportunities to camp and fish, citing rising demand for campsites. Colorado Parks and Wildlife Director Laura Clellan called the groundbreaking an important milestone and said the agency looked forward to working with partners to expand recreation in the region.

Rosemont Reservoir, on the south side of Pikes Peak, has long drawn anglers. The state wildlife area is home to several trout species, as well as Splake and Kokanee salmon, according to the release.

The project follows state efforts to coordinate land, water and wildlife management with outdoor access. Polis launched the Regional Partnerships Initiative in 2020 and announced Colorado's Outdoors Strategy in 2025.
