Colorado Springs: CSPD investigating in-custody death following medical event

~ A man died after suffering an unknown medical event in a Colorado Springs police cruiser at the El Paso County jail, police said.

Officers with the Colorado Springs Police Department's Falcon Division responded to a disturbance call in the 2700 block of North Prospect Street on Sept. 30, 2026. They took an adult male into custody and transported him to the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center.

Before booking began, the man experienced a medical event while the cruiser was parked in the jail's secured vehicle entrance, known as a sally port. Officers and medical personnel attempted life-saving measures, but the man died.

The department's Homicide Unit is investigating, as is standard in deaths where the cause or circumstances are unknown. The El Paso County Coroner's Office will determine the cause and manner of death and confirm the man's identity.
