Governor Polis Verbally Declares Disaster Emergency for Oak Fire in Archuleta County, Authorizes Use of Colorado National Guard

PAGOSA SPRINGS ~ Pagosa Springs, Colorado - In response to the rapidly escalating Oak Fire in Pagosa Springs, Governor Polis has declared a disaster emergency and authorized the use of the National Guard to support response efforts. The fire, located west of Pagosa Springs and north of State Highway 160 in the Elk Park/Ironwood subdivision, has exceeded the capacity of local fire departments and county resources.

The Division of Fire Prevention and Control (DFPC) has approved the incident as a State Responsibility fire at the request of the Sheriff. Along with local, county, and federal agencies, DFPC is joined by the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHSEM) and Colorado State Patrol in providing assistance.

With the disaster declaration, the State Emergency Operations and Resource Mobilization Plans have been activated. DHSEM will coordinate the state's response through management of the State Emergency Operations Center and deployment of field operations staff to support county emergency managers with consequence management. DFPC is leading incident management and suppression efforts in collaboration with other Department of Public Safety Divisions.

Governor Polis' swift action demonstrates his commitment to protecting communities from natural disasters. The state's coordinated response will ensure that all necessary resources are mobilized to contain and extinguish the Oak Fire.
