DENVER ~ Denver - After five years of dedicated service to the state of Colorado, Major General Laura Clellan, The Adjutant General of Colorado and Executive Director of the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, has announced her retirement. Governor Jared Polis expressed his gratitude and congratulations to General Clellan on her retirement and thanked her for her leadership of the Colorado National Guard and efforts to support military families.
General Clellan's retirement ceremony is scheduled for October 18, 2025. She was appointed as Adjutant General and Executive Director in June 2020 and officially assumed the role in August of that year. In December 2023, she was promoted to the rank of Major General by the United States Senate.
Governor Polis praised General Clellan for her unwavering commitment to service during challenging times such as wildfires, floods, and the ongoing pandemic. He also acknowledged her pivotal role in supporting military families and ensuring their well-being in Colorado.
In a statement, Major General Clellan expressed her gratitude for being able to serve as the Adjutant General of Colorado. She described it as the greatest honor of her career and a privilege beyond words. She also highlighted the extraordinary accomplishments made possible by the dedication and professionalism of every member of the organization.

General Clellan has had an impressive military career spanning over three decades. She was commissioned as a Military Police Officer in 1989 and has served on five operational deployments including in Honduras, Saudi Arabia, Panama, Hungary, and Afghanistan. In November 1998, she joined the Colorado Army National Guard (COARNG) where she held various leadership positions at different levels.
Some notable positions held by General Clellan include Company Commander of the 220th Military Police Company, Battalion Commander of the 193rd Military Police Battalion, J1 of Special Operations Detachment - Korea, Land Component Commander - COARNG, and Assistant Adjutant General - COARNG. She has been awarded several prestigious medals and badges, including the Legion of Merit with 1 Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with 2 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Parachutist Badge.
