Governor Polis Unveils Colorado 150 Art Installations at Eldora Mountain, Jackson Lake State Park

NEDERLAND ~ NEDERLAND - In celebration of Colorado's 150th birthday, Governor Jared Polis unveiled two new art installations today. These displays are part of a larger effort to honor the state's rich history through community art that tells the story of Colorado's past and future. The Governor had previously announced the artists and hinted at the locations on social media, building anticipation for the big reveal.

At Eldora Mountain, Governor Polis revealed a stunning mural by artist Jessica Moon Bernstein-Schiano. Titled "Tracks Through Time," the mural spans across two connected wall surfaces and depicts the evolving relationship between Coloradans and the Rocky Mountain landscape. Drawing inspiration from the state's history of skiing and outdoor recreation, Bernstein-Schiano uses simplified forms, bold shapes, and directional movement to represent ascent, descent, and shifting terrain. The visuals pay homage to both early ski travel and modern recreation while also inviting viewers to connect with their own experiences in the mountains.

"Colorado is home to amazing and talented artists across our state," said Governor Polis at the unveiling event. "I am excited to be at one of our iconic ski destinations to unveil 'Tracks Through Time,' an art piece that truly speaks to our adventurous Colorado souls and captures the mountain community spirit."

The General Manager of Eldora Mountain Resort, Andrew Gast, expressed his excitement about hosting Governor Polis and unveiling this beautiful tribute to Colorado's history. "Eldora has always been a place where community, culture, and outdoor passion meet," said Gast. "And this mural captures that spirit perfectly."

Artist Jessica Moon Bernstein-Schiano shared her hopes for the mural, saying "My hope is that 'Tracks Through Time' celebrates where we have been and reminds us how fortunate we are to have this place and to care for it and whatever comes next."

Governor Polis also made a visit yesterday to Jackson Lake State Park where he unveiled another artwork, this time by artist Joseph Graves Jr. The painting, titled "Dearfield," pays tribute to Colorado's largest Black homesteading community. Founded in 1910, Dearfield was a bold vision of self-determination, opportunity, and belonging for African American families seeking a better future. Despite facing challenges such as drought and economic hardship, the town's legacy remains one of perseverance and the power of collective hope.

"Dearfield's story is one of courage," said Governor Polis. "And this painting makes sure Coloradans never forget it." He praised Graves Jr.'s ability to turn a chapter of perseverance into a piece of art that will inspire visitors to Jackson Lake State Park for generations to come.

As Colorado celebrates its 150th birthday, these art installations serve as a reminder of the state's rich history and the enduring pursuit of freedom, dignity, and possibility that continues to shape it today.
