DENVER/THORNTON ~ Governor Jared Polis made a visit to two schools in Colorado, the Denver Language School Gilpin Campus and the Global Village Academy North in Thornton, to celebrate the state's educational achievements. These schools were mentioned in his recent State of the State address as examples of successful education models.
During his visit, Governor Polis emphasized his commitment to supporting students and educators in Colorado. He proposed an increase in per pupil funding and ensuring that students are funded based on their actual location, rather than using a budget stabilization factor. The Governor also highlighted the great work being done at Global Village Academy and Denver Language School, stating that they serve as examples for other schools to follow.
Global Village Academy North is a language immersion school that serves a large number of low-income students. Despite this, over 80% of 8th graders are at or above grade level in reading and over 90% in writing. The Denver Language School's Gilpin Campus offers Mandarin or Spanish immersion options for students between 5th and 8th grade. This unique program model includes equal instruction time in English and the chosen language, with students being eligible to take the AP Exam upon completion.
