DENVER ~ In a recent statement, Colorado Governor Jared Polis expressed his concerns about President Trump's new Executive Order on tariffs. The court's decision to strike down the previous tariffs in April, which had raised the cost of everyday goods for Americans, was led by Colorado.
According to Governor Polis, this new round of 25% tariffs imposed by the President will only continue to push prices up for American consumers. He also highlighted the negative impact it will have on small businesses and how it could potentially benefit strategic adversaries like China. The Governor specifically mentioned Japan, one of Colorado's largest trade partners, as an example of an ally being affected by these "senseless" tariffs.
The Office of State Planning and Budget (OSPB) economic forecast in June projected that these tariff taxes will continue to harm the economy, hinder job growth, create uncertainty for businesses, and increase the likelihood of a recession. Additionally, reports have shown that tariffs are also contributing to an increase in trade crime.

Governor Polis has been actively promoting international relationships through events such as Colorado-Mexico Friendship Day and Colorado-Canada Friendship Day. These events were held in March alongside Mexican Consul General Pavel Meléndez Cruz and Sylvain Fabi, Consul General of Canada in Denver respectively.
Colorado is ranked 5th in the nation for beef exports and it is one of the state's top agricultural commodities. In 2024 alone, the US exported $10.45 billion worth of beef and beef products globally. However, with countries like Mexico, Canada, South Korea, Japan and China - all major export markets for Colorado - now facing Trump's on-again off-again tariffs, this could have a significant impact on the state's agricultural economy. Other major agricultural commodities such as dairy, wheat and corn also heavily rely on export markets for business.
Governor Polis' statement highlights the potential consequences that these tariffs could have on Colorado's economy and its relationships with key trade partners. As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how these tariffs will ultimately affect the state and its residents.
