Colorado: Governor Polis Signs Bills Into Law Expanding Access to Behavioral Health Care and Higher Education for Military Connected Coloradans

DENVER ~ In a move to support and uplift the military community in Colorado, Governor Jared Polis signed two new laws today. Joined by Lt. Governor Dianne Primavera, the governor signed legislation aimed at expanding healthcare access and services for veterans and military-connected families, as well as providing tuition waivers for eligible members of the Colorado National Guard.

The first bill, SB25-247, also known as the Tuition Waiver & Colorado National Guard Members Act, was sponsored by Senators Jeff Bridges and Barbara Kirkmeyer, and Representatives Shannon Bird and Rick Taggart. This bill will save military-connected families money on healthcare and reduce the cost of college for those looking to further their education.

Governor Polis expressed his gratitude to the sponsors for creating legislation that supports and protects Colorado's important military community. He stated, "In Colorado, we are committed to expanding support and opportunities for our valuable military community."

Lt. Governor Primavera also spoke about the importance of supporting those who serve. She said, "Colorado has always proudly stood behind those who serve - and today, we're reaffirming that commitment." She went on to say that with these bills, they are taking real steps to continue supporting military members, their families, and veterans.

The second bill signed by Governor Polis was HB25-1132 - Military Family Behavioral Health Grant Program. This bill was sponsored by Representatives Sean Camacho and Rebekah Stewart, and Senators Nick Hinrichsen and Jeff Bridges. It aims to provide mental health resources for military families.

In addition to these bills focused on supporting the military community in Colorado, Governor Polis also signed two bills into law aimed at promoting transparency in education practices.

SB25-063 - Library Resource Decision Standards for Public Schools was sponsored by Senators Lisa Cutter and Dafna Michaelson Jenet, and Representatives Lorena Garcia and Jenny Willford. This bill sets standards for public schools when making decisions about library resources.

The second bill, HB25-1135 - Communication Devices in Schools, was sponsored by Representatives Meghan Lukens and Mary Bradfield, and Senators Janice Marchman and Lisa Frizell. This bill aims to strike a balance between helping students learn better in the classroom and having access to technology when needed.

Governor Polis emphasized the importance of creating engaging and productive learning environments for Colorado students. He stated, "Finding ways to create engaging and productive learning environments for Colorado students that foster stronger learning and bolster student engagement is critically important."

Finally, Governor Polis also signed HB25-1185 - Child Conceived from Sex Assault Court Proceedings into law administratively. This bipartisan bill, sponsored by Representatives Meg Froelich and Jenny Willford, and Senator Mike Weissman, aims to provide support for children conceived from sexual assault court proceedings.

With these new laws in place, Colorado is taking steps towards supporting its military community and promoting transparency in education practices. Governor Polis expressed his commitment to these efforts, stating that Colorado is proud to stand with its military-connected communities and is committed to being the best home for them.
