DENVER ~ As the federal deadline for REAL ID compliance approaches, Colorado is proud to announce that over 96% of all driver licenses and identification cards issued in the state are now compliant. This high rate of compliance is one of the highest in the country, thanks to the efforts of Governor Jared Polis and the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
Since 2013, Colorado has been a mandatory REAL ID state, meaning that all eligible residents have received a REAL ID-compliant credential either during their initial issuance or renewal process. This proactive approach to modernization and public service has put Colorado ahead of the curve in ensuring its residents are prepared for this important national security milestone.
The REAL ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, established minimum security standards for state-issued driver licenses and identification cards. These more secure credentials are crucial for national security, fraud mitigation, and identity theft prevention. Starting today, May 7th, 2025, TSA will not accept non-REAL ID compliant credentials for domestic flights. This means that individuals will need a REAL ID-compliant credential or another federally accepted form of identification, such as a passport, to board a flight within the United States.
