DENVER ~ In a recent statement, Governor Jared Polis of Colorado has once again urged President Trump to abandon his tariff-tax plan and refrain from increasing taxes and costs for Americans on essential items such as clothing and food. This plea comes after President Trump's decision to extend the tariff deadline for Mexico by 90 days, while also implementing new tariffs on imports from other countries, including a 10% increase on Canadian goods.
Governor Polis expressed his concern over the impact of these tariffs on the American economy and its citizens. "Once again, President Trump is playing games with our economy, and it is the American people who will suffer. These tariffs will result in higher costs for everyday goods such as food, clothing, and electronics. It essentially places a tax burden on Americans and hurts our economy by creating uncertainty that is detrimental to investments and job growth," he stated.
Earlier this month, Governor Polis took action against President Trump's tariff policy by signing an Executive Order. The order directs the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade (OEDIT) to establish a task force that will work towards reducing the impact of these tariffs on various sectors of Colorado's economy. This includes industries such as aerospace manufacturing, agriculture, and healthcare.

According to reports from the Colorado Office of State Planning and Budget (OSPB), these tariffs are expected to continue harming the economy by affecting job growth, causing uncertainty for businesses, and increasing the likelihood of a recession. Additionally, there has been an increase in trade crime due to these tariffs.
Governor Polis has been actively promoting international relationships with countries like Mexico and Canada through events such as Colorado-Mexico Friendship Day in June and Colorado-Canada Friendship Day in March. However, with both countries now facing fluctuating tariffs from President Trump's administration, it could potentially harm Colorado's exports.
Colorado is currently ranked fifth in the nation for beef exports, which is one of its largest industries. In 2024, the US exported a total of $10.45 billion in beef and beef products globally. Mexico, Canada, South Korea, Japan, and China are among the top export countries for Colorado's beef industry, all of which are now facing the uncertainty of President Trump's on-again off-again tariffs. Other major agricultural commodities in Colorado, such as dairy, wheat, and corn, also heavily rely on export markets to conduct business.
Governor Polis remains committed to protecting Colorado's economy and its citizens from the negative impacts of these tariffs. With the establishment of the Tariff Burden Reduction Task Force and continued efforts to strengthen international relationships, he hopes to mitigate the effects of President Trump's tariff policy on Colorado's economy.
