DENVER ~ Denver, CO - In a recent press release, Governor Jared Polis and the Colorado Department of Public Safety announced a significant decrease in crime rates across the state. This data comes after the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) released a report showing a decline in crime rates nationally.

According to the report, there has been a steady decline in both violent and property crimes in Colorado. Violent crimes have decreased by 15% overall in the past year, including a 27% decrease in murder, a 15% decrease in non-consensual sexual offenses, a 16% decrease in robbery, and a 15% decrease in aggravated assault.

Property crimes have also seen a significant decrease of more than 25%, with motor vehicle theft statewide decreasing by 33%, burglaries decreasing by 23%, and larceny decreasing by 23%.

Governor Polis expressed his commitment to making Colorado one of the top ten safest states and thanked public safety professionals for their hard work. He stated that every Coloradan deserves to live in a safe and healthy community and that cracking down on crime and providing support to law enforcement and community organizations is crucial for achieving this goal.

The governor has taken action to address various forms of crime in the state. He has signed bills into law that crack down on auto theft, protect citizens from gun violence, and provide grants to community-based organizations focused on proven crime prevention strategies.

Under Governor Polis' leadership, almost every category of crime has decreased since 2023. For example, catalytic converter thefts have decreased by 95% compared to the previous year in Denver alone. This can be attributed to state and local legislative actions taken to combat this type of crime.

One notable success is Senate Bill 24-003, sponsored by Senator Tom Sullivan and Representatives Meg Froelich and Monica Duran. This bill provides the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) with greater capacity to investigate and crackdown on illegal firearm activity. Governor Polis had called for this action in his 2024 State of the State address, and the results are already being seen in Colorado communities.

Since the law went into effect on August 7, the CBI has seized over 40 firearms and made upwards of 30 arrests related to illegal firearm sales and possession. This includes 21 Instacheck referrals, 30 arrests for illegal firearm possession, and a total of 42 illegal firearms seized (21 of which were stolen). Of these firearms, there were 23 handguns, 16 long guns, and three ghost guns or privately made firearms. Additionally, two straw purchases and one magazine violation were also identified.

Governor Polis and the Colorado Department of Public Safety are committed to continuing their efforts to make Colorado a safe place for all its residents. With the support of law enforcement and community organizations, they hope to achieve their goal of making Colorado one of the top ten safest states in the nation.
