WESTMINSTER ~ Westminster, CO - Governor Jared Polis of Colorado made a visit to the Colorado STEM Academy in Westminster today, as part of his efforts to highlight the state's leadership in transit, housing, and workforce development. The academy was recently awarded the Governor's Bright Spot Award for its outstanding academic achievements.
During his visit, Governor Polis discussed Colorado's progress in creating more affordable housing options and expanding transit access at the Vision Zero 2024 Conference in New York. He emphasized the importance of breaking down barriers and providing Coloradans with the freedom to build Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) on their own property. This legislation aims to increase housing near transit and job centers, eliminate costly parking requirements and discriminatory occupancy limits, and ultimately create more affordable housing options for residents.
"Colorado is committed to breaking down barriers and providing access to affordable housing while also expanding transit opportunities across the state," said Governor Polis.

The governor also spoke at the 2024 Americas Leadership Luncheon hosted by the Biennial of the Americas. He stressed the importance of collaboration between states and nations on issues that are crucial to Coloradans and people around the world. Later, he attended the Apprenticeships for America convening where he highlighted Colorado's efforts to strengthen its workforce by increasing apprenticeship opportunities. These programs aim to equip Coloradans with skills needed for well-paying jobs and contribute to the state's thriving economy.
To further support apprenticeships in both public and private sectors, Governor Polis signed House Bill 24-1439 into law. This bill, sponsored by Representatives Leslie Herod and Eliza Hamrick, as well as Senators James Coleman and Rachel Zenzinger, will invest $2 million in Scale Up grants for businesses interested in implementing apprenticeship programs. Additionally, he signed legislation that will provide $15 million in refundable tax credits to help employers hire and retain apprentices.
