Colorado Springs: Improvement project begins in popular City open space

Trending...
~ Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services (PRCS) has announced the start of a trail construction and improvement project in Blodgett Open Space, located on the northwest side of the city. This initiative is a significant step towards achieving the community's vision for the open space and implementing key goals from the Master and Management Plan, which was approved by City Council in 2024.

According to David Deitemeyer, Senior Program Administrator for Trails, Open Space and Parks (TOPS), this project is an exciting development for Blodgett Open Space. "The Master Plan provides a clear roadmap for creating a trail system that is both enjoyable and sustainable, while also ensuring the preservation and protection of the natural area and its wildlife," he stated. He also expressed appreciation for the public's patience and understanding as they undertake this important work.

The planned improvements include designated hiking and biking trails, as well as multi-use trails. In addition, illegal or "social" trails will be decommissioned to allow for open space restoration. A new 50-stall parking lot will also be constructed at the Quarry Trailhead to improve accessibility for all visitors to Blodgett Open Space.

The project is expected to take place throughout summer 2026 and will involve trail marking with flags, use of construction equipment, and potential temporary closures in isolated areas to ensure safety for both the public and trail crews. Users of the open space are advised to use caution around work areas.

As new planned trails are opened for public use, illegal or social trails will be closed in order to protect the natural environment and promote responsible recreation. Additionally, Colorado Springs Fire Department is currently working on additional fuels mitigation planning which involves using survey markers around the open space. This work is scheduled for later this year to ensure the safety and health of the local ecosystem.

The Master and Management Plan for Blodgett Open Space was created with extensive community input gathered through an engagement process, ensuring that the voices of residents were central to shaping the future of this popular open space. The project is funded through the Trails, Open Space and Parks (TOPS) Program and a $250,000 State Trails Grant from Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
