~ Colorado Springs Police Department's K9 unit has received a generous donation from non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. Three of the department's K9 officers, Blue, Loki, and Nyx, have been equipped with bullet and stab protective vests thanks to this charitable contribution.
The vests were sponsored by various individuals and groups. K9 Loki's vest was sponsored by Laura and Tom Kelecy of Colorado Springs, CO in memory of their beloved K9 Britta. The vest is embroidered with the heartfelt message "Gifted by Laura & Tom Kelecy in K9 Britta's Memory". Tim and Jenni Brown sponsored K9 Blue's vest with the sentiment "In honor of protecting all that serve and protect." Nyx's vest was sponsored by the Family (Jensen, Hudson, Winkler, Wells), Friends & Colleagues of CSPD Detective Jared S. Jensen. Her vest is embroidered with "In honor of Detective Jared S. Jensen".
Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., a 501(c)(3) charity established in 2009, aims to provide bullet and stab protective vests to law enforcement dogs across the United States. These vests are custom-fitted and certified by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), making them potentially lifesaving for these four-legged officers. Since its inception, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. has provided over 6,120 vests valued at $6.9 million to K9s in all 50 states through private and corporate donations.

The program is open to U.S. dogs who are at least 20 months old and actively employed and certified with law enforcement or related agencies. Even those with expired vests are eligible to participate. With an estimated 30,000 law enforcement K9s throughout the country, this program plays a crucial role in protecting these valuable members of our police force.
Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. accepts tax-deductible contributions of any amount, but a single donation of $1,050 will sponsor one vest. Each vest has a value of $1800.00 and comes with a five-year warranty. On average, the vests weigh 4-5 lbs. For more information on how to donate or volunteer, please contact (508) 824-6978 or visit their website at www.vik9s.org. Contributions can also be mailed to P.O. Box 9, East Taunton, MA 02718.
The Colorado Springs Police Department's Public Affairs Section will provide updates on the program as they become available. The department is grateful for the support and generosity of Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., as well as the sponsors who made these vests possible for their K9 officers.
