Colorado Springs: City to observe Memorial Day on Monday

~ Colorado Springs, CO - As Memorial Day approaches, the City of Colorado Springs has announced the closure of several administrative and elected administrative offices and agencies on Monday, May 26. This is in observance of the national holiday that honors and remembers those who have served and sacrificed for their country.

Among the offices that will be closed are Mountain Metropolitan Transit's administrative offices, the City Administration Building, City Auditorium, City Clerk's office, City Hall, Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum, Deerfield, Hillside, Meadows Park and Westside Community Centers, Municipal Court, Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services Administrative Building, Rock Ledge Ranch Historic Site, Sales Tax Office, Sports Office at Memorial Park and Therapeutic Recreation Program at Westside Community Center.

However, some facilities will remain open for normal business hours unless otherwise noted. These include Evergreen and Fairview cemeteries where gates will be open to visitors but offices will be closed. The cemeteries will also host two special events in honor of Memorial Day. On Sunday May 25 at noon there will be a Purple Heart Trail sign dedication ceremony to recognize and honor military members who have been awarded the Purple Heart medal. On Monday May 26 at 10 a.m., there will be an annual Memorial Day event featuring the Buffalo Soldiers.

Garden of the Gods Park will also remain open for visitors to enjoy its natural beauty. The Helen Hunt Falls Visitor Center will open from Saturday May 24 through Monday September 1 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

For those looking for outdoor activities on Memorial Day, Memorial Park will be open as well as Patty Jewett and Valley Hi golf courses (weather permitting). The courses will open at 6:30 a.m. with last tee times approximately four hours before sunset for 18-holes and two-and-a-half hours before sunset for nine-holes. Indoor dining options are also available at Patty Jewett Bar & Grill and CADDIE'S at Valley Hi.

Pikes Peak - America's Mountain will also be open for visitors, with uphill gates changing to summer hours on Friday May 23. The gates will open at 7:30 a.m. and the Pikes Peak Summit will close at 7 p.m., with the downhill gate closing at 8 p.m. The Pikes Peak Shuttles will also begin operation on Friday May 23, with tickets required for entry.

For those planning to visit North Slope Recreation Area, a daily $1 parking permit is required in addition to a One-Day Admission Pass. The South Slope Recreation Area is scheduled to open for the season on May 29, with access increased from three to four days per week. Lastly, Starsmore Visitor and Nature Center will begin its summer hours on Saturday May 24, opening daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

As the city takes time to honor and remember those who have served their country, residents and visitors can still enjoy various activities and facilities throughout Colorado Springs on Memorial Day.
