City of Colorado Springs Opens Reservations for Trackchair Program

Trending...
~ Colorado Springs, CO - The city's Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services (PRCS) Department has announced the launch of their new Trackchair program, aimed at providing individuals with mobility challenges access to the city's open spaces. This program will offer free reservations and guided hikes on Wednesdays through Sundays, starting this year.

According to PRCS Assistant Director Kim King, the department is excited to offer this opportunity for those who may not have been able to explore the city's trails and open spaces before. "We are pleased to be able to provide incredible recreational experiences to those with mobility challenges," said King. "This program would not have been possible without our partners and their funding, which allows us to make our parks more accessible for the entire Colorado Springs community."

The Trackchairs used in this program are equipped with rear stability wheels, a four-point harness, dual port USB, and attendant control for volunteers or PRCS staff to assist with maneuverability. This collaboration between the Trails, Open Space and Parks (TOPS) and Therapeutic Recreation programs aims to remove barriers and allow visitors to explore designated trails that may not be suitable for regular wheelchairs. The Action Trackchairs were made possible through funding from the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Outdoor Equality Grant and the Colorado Springs Office of Accessibility.

Reservations for the Trackchair program can be made on the city's website at ColoradoSprings.gov/TrackChair. The guided hikes will take place from 8:00am-11:30am and 12:30pm-3:00pm on alternating days between Red Rock Canyon Open Space and Blodgett Open Space. This new program is a testament to Colorado Springs' commitment towards inclusivity and accessibility for all members of its community.
