Trending...
~ The City of Colorado Springs is gearing up to host its annual 9/11 Commemoration Ceremony on September 11th at the Peace Officers' Memorial in Memorial Park. The event, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 10 a.m. with welcome remarks from Mayor Yemi.

This year's keynote speaker will be retired Air Force Lt. Gen. Mike Gould, who also served as the former superintendent of the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA). Lt. Gen. Gould played a crucial role in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks as he was the commander of the Cheyenne Mountain Operations center at the time. The operations center provided vital information to the Pentagon's National Military Command Center and transmitted NORAD orders to ground all aircraft over the U.S.

During his speech, Lt. Gen. Gould will share his personal recollections of that fateful day and provide insight into its lasting impact on our nation. A graduate of USAFA in 1976, Lt. Gen. Gould held various key positions in the Air Force before assuming his role as USAFA superintendent in 2009. After retiring from the military, he was appointed to the inaugural College Football Playoff Selection Committee and currently serves as Executive Vice Chair of both the Association of Graduates and Air Force Academy Foundation.

The tradition of holding a 9/11 commemoration event in Colorado Springs dates back to 2002, with hosting responsibilities rotating between different organizations such as the City of Colorado Springs, El Paso County, Fort Carson, Peterson Space Force Base, Schriever Space Force Base, and USAFA.

As we approach this solemn anniversary, let us join together as a community to honor and remember those who lost their lives on September 11th and pay tribute to those who continue to serve our country with bravery and dedication every day.
