~ Colorado Springs Airport Director of Aviation Announces Retirement
After eight years of dedicated service, Greg Phillips, the Director of Aviation for the Colorado Springs Airport (COS), has announced his retirement. His last day with the City will be on February 7th.
Mayor Yemi Mobolade expressed gratitude for Phillips' contributions to both the City of Colorado Springs and the airport. "Greg's work overseeing the growth and expansion of the airport to keep up with the demands of our growing city will positively impact Colorado Springs and the millions of passengers who travel through the COS terminal for years to come," said Mayor Mobolade. "We wish Greg the very best in his retirement."
Phillips was hired by former Mayor John Suthers in January 2017. During his tenure, he oversaw a record number of passengers traveling through COS thanks to continuous expansion efforts. This included adding new air service options and nonstop flights, as well as introducing international travel to Cancun, Mexico for the first time this summer. Additionally, Phillips' team has been leading a $36 million Concourse Modernization project known as ElevateCOS, which aims to create a more modern, accessible, and sustainable airport with enhanced traveler amenities.

Reflecting on his time at COS, Phillips stated, "It has been an honor to work with the incredible team at the Colorado Springs Airport for the past eight years. We have seen incredible growth and made significant contributions to our community." He went on to highlight accomplishments such as doubling air service, adding new carriers, and preparing for the first international air service in Colorado Springs' history.
Phillips is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and served as a helicopter pilot and Army Ranger before transitioning into executive airport management roles. He also worked as an engineering project manager for Boeing and in the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
In light of Phillips' retirement, Alex Kovacs, the COS Airport Assistant Director of Construction and Finance, will serve as the acting director. Kovacs brings a wealth of aviation experience to the role, having served in various positions at the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority for 16 years. He is also a Certified Member of the American Association of Airport Executives. The City will begin a national search for a new COS Airport Director of Aviation and will post the position in the near future.
