~ Governor Jared Polis of Colorado made a series of community visits today, traveling to Commerce City, Aurora, and Denver. The purpose of these visits was to highlight the importance of affordable housing and economic growth in these areas.
The first stop on the Governor's itinerary was the South Platte Crossing apartments in Commerce City. This complex consists of 60 units and is conveniently located near bus and transit services, making it easily accessible for tenants. The apartments are available to households earning up to 30% of the Area Median Income (AMI), as well as those earning up to 80% AMI. The project received funding from both the Department of Local Affairs and the Office of Economic Development and International Trade.
During his visit, Governor Polis emphasized the need for more housing options for Coloradans from all income levels. "We want to create more housing opportunities for Coloradans of every budget," he stated. "These apartments are a great example of how that can be done." He also noted that he had attended the groundbreaking ceremony for this project last year and was proud that state funding had helped bring it to fruition. He praised the community's efforts in increasing housing options and strengthening their neighborhoods.

Next, Governor Polis visited La Plaza Colorado in Aurora, a vibrant community space that is home to several local restaurants and small businesses. This area not only drives economic growth but also celebrates cultural heritage. In February, La Plaza will open the largest Hispanic Food Hall in the United States with over 34 authentic food hall kitchens serving not only neighboring Anschutz Medical Campus but also all of Aurora and the Denver Metro area.
The Governor expressed his support for small businesses during his visit, stating that they are "the backbone of our economy." He enjoyed sampling food from various restaurants and browsing through shops at La Plaza Colorado while interacting with members of the Aurora community. "Coloradans and their families come here for good food, good shopping, and good community," he said.
Later in the day, Governor Polis joined the City of Aurora's Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Opening Ceremony to honor the upcoming holiday and the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. He spoke about King's fight for freedom and equal opportunities for all individuals. "Here in Colorado, we want to protect our freedoms and economic opportunities and continue working to make our state a Colorado for all," he stated.
