DENVER ~ Denver, CO - In an effort to address the growing political polarization in America, Colorado Governor Jared Polis hosted an event titled "Repairing the Breach In a Time of Political Polarization" earlier this week. The event was part of the National Governor's Association Disagree Better Initiative and aimed to bridge the divide in American politics.
Governor Polis was joined by former Governor Bill Owens and Tim Shriver, CEO of the Special Olympics and co-creator of The Dignity Index. Together, they discussed how individuals can disagree with respect and work towards building a greater sense of belonging for all Americans.
During the event, Governor Polis emphasized the responsibility that public leaders have to lead with dignity and respect. He also highlighted research that shows how standing together publicly and committing to constructively addressing differences can have a depolarizing impact.

Tim Shriver echoed this sentiment, stating that it is not disagreements themselves that cause divisions, but rather treating each other with contempt when we disagree. He emphasized the importance of treating each other with dignity in order to bring people back together.
The event also featured former media editor and academic leader Paul Edwards from the Wheatley Institute, as well as a panel of religious leaders including Rabbi Emily Hyatt from Temple Emanuel, Dave Runyon from CityUnite, and Ms. Shara Smith from the Interfaith Alliance of Colorado.
Rabbi Emily Hyatt spoke about how despite theological differences, many faith traditions share common values such as love for fellow human beings and respect for all people's inherent dignity.
The event was supported by organizations such as the National Institute for Civil Discourse, the Wheatley Institute, and One American Movement. It provided attendees with language and tools to have healthy disagreements across differences and help bridge divides in America.
Governor Polis hopes that events like this will encourage individuals to engage in respectful dialogue and work towards finding common ground amidst political differences. As he stated, "We can all play a role in healing our nation by treating each other with dignity and respect."
