~ Construction to Begin on New Trail Reroute Project in Bear Creek Cañon Park

Starting this Sunday, May 4, a trail reroute project will commence along the Palmer Red Rock Loop at the Section 16 Trailhead in Bear Creek Cañon Park. The project, which is expected to be completed by the end of June, aims to improve the popular hiking and biking destination for nature enthusiasts.

The Palmer Red Rock Loop Trail connects to the nearby Red Rock Canyon Open Space and is a well-loved spot for outdoor activities. The new construction will take place off the current trail, meaning there will be no closures necessary during the process.

The main focus of this project is the construction of a 400-foot sustainable trail that will replace the existing steps. These steps have deteriorated over time and are less durable and difficult to maintain. The new trail will provide a safer and more sustainable option for all users.

This initiative is part of the Pikes Peak Regional Crew Leader Training, an annual volunteer training program that involves coordinated efforts from various organizations such as El Paso County Parks & Community Services Department, City of Colorado Springs Parks Recreation and Cultural Services (CSPRCS), Rocky Mountain Field Institute (RMFI), and Trails and Open Space Coalition (TOSC).

According to Dan Allen, Colorado Springs Parks Trail Project Specialist, this project not only aims to enhance the trail system but also provides an opportunity to educate emerging trail leaders on proper trail construction and restoration techniques. He expressed excitement about the potential benefits this new trail will bring to all users.

During this period, trail users are encouraged to respect work zones and stay tuned for further updates. To learn more about Crew Leader Training or get involved in volunteer efforts, visit RMFI.org/CrewLeaderTraining.
