~ Colorado Springs City Engineer and Deputy Director of Public Works, Gayle Sturdivant, was recently honored with the prestigious General Palmer Award by the American Council of Engineering Companies of Colorado. This award is given to nonmembers who have made significant contributions to the state, received recognition in the engineering community, and impacted future generations.
Sturdivant is only the second recipient from Southern Colorado in the 37-year history of the award. Bill Hoffman, who presented the award to Sturdivant at a ceremony on April 24th at Hotel Polaris, praised her for her leadership in infrastructure development, procurement, project delivery, and asset management. He also noted that her work has shaped Colorado's engineering landscape and set high standards for future projects.
In addition to her technical expertise, Sturdivant is also committed to mentorship and advancing the project management profession. Rich Mulledy, Public Works Director for the City of Colorado Springs, described her as "one of the best engineers in all of Colorado" and praised her talent, ability, leadership, and dedication.
Sturdivant holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Seattle University and has been in her current role for five years. During this time, she has overseen some of the most transformative infrastructure projects in Colorado Springs including the Circle Drive Bridges Replacement and Marksheffel Road Widening. She has also secured state and federal funding for City-led projects.

This regional project brought Arkansas River water stored in Pueblo Reservoir to Colorado Springs, Fountain, Security and Pueblo West.
Sturdivant's impressive accomplishments also include serving as acting Public Works Director from 2023-2024 and spearheading the successful efforts to renew the Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority sales tax in 2022 and the 2C Road Improvement Program sales tax in 2024, both by overwhelming margins.
She holds Professional Engineer (PE) licenses in Colorado and Nebraska, as well as a Project Management Professional (PMP) certification. Sturdivant also serves on the Pikes Peak Area Council of Government's Transportation Advisory Committee.
Gayle Sturdivant's dedication, leadership, and contributions to the engineering community have not only shaped Colorado's infrastructure but have also left a lasting impact on future generations.
