Colorado Springs: From sunrise to summit adventures: August, September events on Pikes Peak – America’s Mountain

Saturday, Aug. 9 ~ As summer continues on Pikes Peak, there are even more exciting events to look forward to in the months of August and September. From the 16th consecutive Broadmoor Cycle to the Summit to two additional Sunrise Openings, there is something for everyone to enjoy on America's Mountain.

On Saturday, August 9th, the Pikes Peak Highway will have a delayed opening until 9 a.m. due to the Pikes Peak Cycling Hill Climb. This event, presented by The Broadmoor and the Anschutz Foundation, will see participants cycling up the mountain. The North Slope Recreation Area will still open at its regular time of 7:30 a.m. For more information about this event, visit coloradospringssports.org/cycletothesummit/.

The following month, on Saturday, September 6th, the Pikes Peak Challenge will take place. This fundraising event encourages registered participants to hike to the summit of Pikes Peak - America's Mountain. Survivors of brain injury, along with their family members and community supporters, will start their ascent at Barr Trail in Manitou Springs. The Pikes Peak Highway will not be impacted by this event. To learn more about this event and how to participate or donate, visit pikespeakchallenge.com.

On Saturday, September 13th, Pikes Peak - America's Mountain will host its annual Youth Fishing Derby at Crystal Reservoir from 8:30 to 11 a.m. This free event is open to kids ages 6-15 and includes access to the Pikes Peak Highway for both the participant and their accompanying family or guardians. The first 100 kids will also receive fishing gear provided by the organizers. No experience or fishing license is required for youth participants. Prizes in multiple categories will be awarded at a luncheon and awards ceremony following the event.

The following weekend on Saturday, September 20th, the Pikes Peak Ascent will take place. The summit of Pikes Peak will be closed to highway visitors, including Pikes Peak Ascent spectators, until 2 p.m. Guests can make reservations to drive to the summit for 2 p.m. or later. The North Slope Recreation Area will open at 7:30 a.m. For those who want to celebrate with the runners upon their return to Manitou Springs, Pikes Peak Marathon officials encourage family and friends to do so. The next day, Sunday, September 21st, the Pikes Peak Marathon will take place. This event will not impact access to Pikes Peak - America's Mountain. For more information about the race, visit PikesPeakMarathon.org.

On Saturday, September 27th, another Sunrise Opening event will take place on the summit of Pikes Peak. The Gateway will open at 5 a.m., with last entry for the special event at 6:30 a.m. To guarantee a spot on the summit, a timed entry permit per vehicle and admission fees must be purchased in advance online. Shuttle service will also be available for those who do not wish to drive up themselves. Admission sales may also be offered at the Gateway on that day based on availability, but access to the North Slope Recreation Area will not be provided. This event is weather permitting and more information can be found at DrivePikesPeak.com.
