Colorado: Governor Polis Verbally Declares Disaster Emergency for LeRoux Fire

DELTA COUNTY ~ In response to the growing LeRoux Fire in Delta County, Governor Polis has declared a disaster emergency to provide support for response efforts. The order, which will go into effect at 12:01am on Tuesday, August 5, was requested by the Sheriff as the fire has exceeded the capabilities of local resources.

The declaration allows for additional external resources and state support to be utilized in managing and suppressing the fire, as well as protecting the values at risk. Currently, the fire is estimated to have burned approximately 700 acres of private and Bureau of Land Management land. As a precautionary measure, 15 homes have been evacuated and 152 are on pre-evacuation notice.

To aid in the efforts, interagency aviation and ground resources have been mobilized, including those from the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control (DFPC). A Type 3 Incident Management Team (IMT) has also been ordered to take command of the fire.

According to officials, fire conditions in western Colorado are at near record levels and there is an elevated risk for continued fire activity in the coming week. With this disaster declaration, both the State Emergency Operations Plan and Resource Mobilization Plan have been activated. The Colorado Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHSEM) will coordinate the state's response through management of the State Emergency Operations Center and deployment of field operations staff to assist county emergency managers with consequence management.

The Division of Fire Prevention and Control (DFPC) will lead incident management and suppression efforts in collaboration with other divisions within CDPS. As firefighters continue to battle this blaze, residents are urged to stay informed about evacuation orders and follow all safety precautions advised by authorities.
