ENGLEWOOD ~ ENGLEWOOD - Englewood Middle School has been selected as one of the recipients of the 2025 NLGA Lt. Governors STEM Scholarship Program, announced by Lt. Governor Dianne Primavera. The school will receive $1,000 as part of a national call for applications to fund STEM programming and curriculum.
Lt. Governor Primavera expressed her excitement for Colorado students to engage in hands-on STEM learning that promotes sustainability and creativity. She believes that projects like the one at Englewood Middle School empower students to think critically, solve real-world problems, and care for the planet.
The school plans to use the scholarship to fund a project on Sustainability and Upcycling for students in grades 6 to 8. Using the "engineering design process" and STEM principles, students will repurpose old materials such as mini-blinds to create an upcycled piece of artwork. This project aims to develop resourcefulness, creativity, and mindful consumption among students while reducing their ecological footprint.
NLGA opened the application period for the STEM Scholarship Program in January 2025 and received over 125 requests from schools in 32 states and territories. Out of these, only twelve schools were awarded $500 - $1,000 for STEM-related expenses.

Kellie Rittershausen, Executive Director of NLGA, highlighted the unique position of lieutenant governors in leading on STEM education. She believes that by supporting STEM-related activities in schools across the country, a long-term interest and passion for STEM education can be encouraged among America's youth.
The Scholarship Program is administered by NLGA and sponsored by ACT, a nonpartisan nonprofit association for the nation's seconds-in-command. Janet Godwin, CEO of ACT, expressed pride in being the sponsor of this program since its inception and seeing its growth and impact over the past four years. She emphasized that a high-quality STEM education is crucial for our country's future workforce and that ACT is committed to ensuring that all students are prepared for the evolving postsecondary and work opportunities.
Public, private, and Tribal schools serving pre-K-12th grade students in the 50 states and five U.S. territories were invited to apply for funding to support STEM-related activities, programming, curriculum, equipment, and other expenses. The winning schools will receive their funding in May.
