DENVER ~ In response to the ongoing Schwachheim Fire near Trinidad, Governor Polis has declared a disaster emergency today. The fire, which is currently estimated to be over 300 acres in size, is burning within the Lake Dorothy State Wildlife Area. This declaration activates the State Emergency Operations Plan and directs the Department of Public Safety and its Divisions of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHSEM) and Fire Prevention and Control (DFPC) to take all necessary actions to assist with response, recovery, and mitigation efforts.

The support provided by the state includes engine and hand crews to aid in containment efforts, as well as aerial resources from DFPC. Additionally, a Type 3 Incident Management Team sponsored by DFPC will be responsible for managing response efforts.

Governor Polis emphasized the importance of swift action in addressing this wildfire and ensuring the safety of residents in the affected area. The verbal declaration serves as a call to action for all agencies involved to work together towards containing and mitigating the Schwachheim Fire.
