Colorado: Governor Polis Appoints Sarah E. Zane to the 4th Judicial District Court and Laura C. Makar to the 9th Judicial District Court

DENVER - Today, the Governor appointed Sarah E. Zane to the 4th Judicial District Court, and Laura C. Makar to the 9th Judicial District Court. Ms. Zane fills the vacancy created by the retirement of the Honorable Monica J. Gomez. The vacancy is effective January 1, 2025. Ms. Makar fills the vacancy created by the Honorable Christopher Seldin not standing for retention. The vacancy is effective October 5, 2024.

Ms. Zane is a District and County Court Magistrate in El Paso County, a position she has held since 2024. Her docket consists primarily of domestic relations and civil matters. Previously, Ms. Zane was an Attorney at Knies, Helland and McPherson Law (2021-2024); Magistrate in the 16th Judicial District (2016-2021); Staff Attorney at Colorado Legal Services (2015-2016); and Deputy Public Defender for the Colorado State Public Defender in the La Junta Office (2008-2015). Ms. Zane earned her B.A.A. from Central Michigan University in 2005 and her J.D. from Cooley Law School in 2008.

Ms. Makar is a Deputy County Attorney for Pitkin County, a position she has held since 2018. Her practice consists of civil litigation. Previously, she was a Senior Assistant County Attorney (2015-2018) and Assistant County Attorney (2013-2015) for Pitkin County; and Associate Attorney at Patrick, Miller & Kropf, P.C. (2008-2013). Ms. Makar earned her B.A. from the University of Colorado in 2004 and her J.D. from the University of Colorado Law School in 2008.
