DENVER ~ In a move to strengthen the judicial system in Colorado, Governor Polis has appointed Matthew G. Margeson as the newest addition to the 7th Judicial District. This appointment comes as a result of Senate Bill 25-024 and will officially take effect on July 1, 2026.
Margeson brings with him a wealth of experience in the legal field. He currently serves as a Magistrate Judge for the Court of Indian Offenses for the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, where he has been since 2023. In this role, he presides over criminal and domestic cases. Additionally, Margeson also holds the position of Municipal Court Judge for the City of Durango since 2024, handling municipal matters.

Prior to these roles, Margeson served as a County Court Supervisor for the 6th Judicial District Attorney's Office in 2023 and was a Dolores County Court Judge in the 22nd Judicial District from 2023 to 2024. He also has extensive experience in prosecution, having been elected as District Attorney from 2021 to 2023 and serving as Assistant District Attorney from 2017 to 2021 and Deputy District Attorney from 2014 to 2017 in the same district.
Margeson's legal career began after receiving his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Michigan in 2004. He then went on to earn his Juris Doctorate from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law in 2007.
With his diverse background and extensive knowledge of the legal system, Margeson is well-equipped to serve as a judge in the state's judicial system. His appointment is expected to bring positive changes and improvements to Colorado's justice system.
