~ Colorado Springs, CO - The City of Colorado Springs has officially recognized April 20-26 as Volunteer Week, honoring the dedication and hard work of volunteers throughout the city. These volunteers have made significant contributions to improving neighborhoods, waterways, park facilities, recreational programming, and more.
During a City Council meeting on Tuesday, a resolution was passed to acknowledge the thousands of citizen volunteers who generously donated their time in 2024. According to the latest state volunteerism rate of $36.36 per hour, these volunteers contributed over $6.1 million dollars in service to the community.
Councilmember David Leinweber emphasized the importance of volunteering in strengthening communities and promoting mental health. "Volunteering not only benefits your community but also provides purpose, connection, and belonging," said Leinweber. "It's a powerful tool in fighting against loneliness and depression."
The Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services department saw an impressive 123,067 hours of service from volunteers. This included distributing 106,645 pounds of food and removing 1,897 bags of trash. Volunteers also played a crucial role in fostering connections by coaching a total of 64,534 games for adults and youths.
