City of Colorado Springs highlights efforts of volunteers

~ Colorado Springs, CO - The City of Colorado Springs has officially recognized April 20-26 as Volunteer Week, honoring the dedication and hard work of volunteers throughout the city. These volunteers have made significant contributions to improving neighborhoods, waterways, park facilities, recreational programming, and more.

During a City Council meeting on Tuesday, a resolution was passed to acknowledge the thousands of citizen volunteers who generously donated their time in 2024. According to the latest state volunteerism rate of $36.36 per hour, these volunteers contributed over $6.1 million dollars in service to the community.

Councilmember David Leinweber emphasized the importance of volunteering in strengthening communities and promoting mental health. "Volunteering not only benefits your community but also provides purpose, connection, and belonging," said Leinweber. "It's a powerful tool in fighting against loneliness and depression."

The Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services department saw an impressive 123,067 hours of service from volunteers. This included distributing 106,645 pounds of food and removing 1,897 bags of trash. Volunteers also played a crucial role in fostering connections by coaching a total of 64,534 games for adults and youths.

In addition to these efforts, volunteers also dedicated their time to after-school tutoring sessions and educating over 31,500 guests at local cultural sites. They also adopted more than 270 acres of parkland and nearly 30 miles of trail.

The Adopt-A-Waterway Program saw over 840 volunteers participate in 39 events in 2024. Together they removed an impressive 55,285 pounds (27.6 tons) of debris from waterways.

The Public Safety's Community Advancing Public Safety Program (CAPS) also benefited greatly from volunteer support with a total of 41,613 hours dedicated to advancing public safety through various departments such as the Colorado Springs Police Department and Fire Department.

Even the Colorado Springs Airport had 51 volunteers contribute over 2,800 hours of service to the community.

The City of Colorado Springs offers a variety of ways for individuals to get involved and volunteer. This includes opportunities on 50 boards, commissions, and committees, the Neighborhood Cleanup Program, the COS CAPS Program, the Airport Ambassador Volunteer Program, and various positions within the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department. The Stormwater's Adopt-a-Waterway Program is also a popular choice for those looking to make a difference.
