~ CAÑON CITY, Colo. - In celebration of Colorado's 150th birthday, Governor Jared Polis and the Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) gathered at the Museum of Colorado Prisons to open a 155-year-old safe and seal items in a new time capsule.
The event not only commemorated the state's milestone anniversary, but also highlighted the progress and focus on rehabilitation and well-being within Colorado's correctional facilities. Governor Polis expressed his gratitude towards the CDOC staff for their dedication to public safety and commitment to serving the community.
The safe, which had been sealed for 155 years, contained historical artifacts that predate Colorado's statehood. This serves as a reminder that public safety has always been a top priority in the state, ensuring the safety of all Coloradans.

Executive Director Andre Stancil also spoke at the event, emphasizing the importance of honoring the department's deep roots while looking towards the future. He acknowledged that public safety has evolved significantly since CDOC's founding in 1868 and praised their modern workforce for their continuous innovation.
