DENVER ~ Denver, CO - JB Holston has been announced as the next Executive Director of the Colorado Department of Higher Education by Governor Jared Polis. Holston will take over from Dr. Angie Paccione, who will be stepping down on January 9, 2026. He will begin shadowing her on December 15.
Governor Polis expressed his excitement about Holston's appointment, stating that his extensive experience in academic, business, civic, and community leadership will ensure the success of the Department as it enters a new era in higher education for Coloradans. The Governor believes that Holston's diverse background and energy will drive their vision to better align higher education with the needs of the workforce. This includes ensuring that students are equipped with the necessary skills for high-paying and in-demand careers.
Holston's appointment also marks his inclusion as a member of Governor Polis's 21-member cabinet. He holds a BA and MBA from Stanford University and brings with him a wealth of experience in various fields. For five years, he served as Dean of the University of Denver's School of Engineering and Computer Science. During this time, he spearheaded initiatives such as Colorado's TechHubsNow! which led to the state being designated as one of 31 national Department of Commerce Regional Innovation Hub finalists. He also co-founded the Colorado Mass Timber Coalition to address forest and watershed needs and was involved in important state housing and workforce development initiatives.
