DENVER ~ In response to recent reports that the Trump administration is planning to withdraw funding for freight safety and dismantle the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), Colorado Governor Jared Polis has released a statement expressing concern and calling for more information.
According to Governor Polis, Colorado has not yet received any official notification about these proposed cuts. He emphasized the importance of NCAR as a global leader in earth systems scientific research, which not only contributes to national security but also supports the economy. The governor also highlighted the critical role of NCAR in providing data on severe weather events such as fires and floods, which helps save lives and prevent property damage.
Governor Polis expressed his belief that if these cuts were to go through, it would not only jeopardize public safety but also undermine the value of science. He stated that while climate change is a pressing issue, NCAR's work goes beyond just climate science. The center's research also plays a crucial role in understanding and mitigating natural disasters.

Furthermore, Governor Polis raised concerns about the potential impact of withdrawing funding for freight rail safety. He argued that this move would make Colorado's freight rail corridors less safe and could have negative consequences for commerce. The governor compared this decision to removing seatbelts from cars in the name of efficiency.
Governor Polis concluded by emphasizing that Colorado has been awarded grants for real safety and infrastructure improvements, making these proposed cuts even more concerning. He warned that if they were to move forward, it would put the state at a disadvantage against foreign powers in terms of scientific advancements. The governor called on the Trump administration to reconsider these decisions and prioritize public safety and scientific progress.
