WASHINGTON, D.C. ~ Washington D.C. - The National Governors Association (NGA) is mourning the loss of Governor Arnold I. Palacios of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. The NGA released a statement extending their deepest condolences to Governor Palacios's family and the people of the Northern Mariana Islands.

According to the NGA, Governor Palacios was a dedicated public servant who embodied integrity, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to his community. His leadership and collaborative spirit were evident during his time as Governor, where he brought innovative ideas and a strong vision for a more resilient Northern Mariana Islands.

The NGA also acknowledged Governor Palacios's contributions to their organization, stating that his vision will continue to inspire them in their work. Governor Palacios's career in public service began in the Northern Mariana Islands House of Representatives, where he served four terms and eventually became Speaker from 2008 to 2010. He then went on to serve as Secretary of the Department of Lands and Natural Resources from 2012 to 2015 before being elected Lieutenant Governor in 2018.

In 2022, Governor Palacios made history by winning the gubernatorial race as an independent candidate, becoming the first independent governor in the Commonwealth's history. He later rejoined the Republican Party in late 2024.

The passing of Governor Arnold I. Palacios is a great loss for both his community and the nation as a whole. The NGA joins in mourning his death and extends their heartfelt sympathy to all those who were touched by his life and service.
