Colorado Springs ~ Colorado Governor Jared Polis has released a comprehensive roadmap for governors across the country to improve education systems and better prepare students for success after graduation. The roadmap, developed through the Let's Get Ready: Educating All Americans for Success initiative, aims to redefine the concept of readiness and provide actionable solutions for state leaders.
As the 2024-2025 Chair of the National Governors Association (NGA), Governor Polis led the yearlong Let's Get Ready initiative, which brought together a diverse group of stakeholders including fellow governors, students, educators, employers, advocates, researchers and policymakers. The goal was to explore innovative education solutions that would empower individuals with the skills, knowledge and competencies needed to thrive in today's society.
Governor Polis believes that the traditional definition of readiness, which focuses solely on academic indicators, is no longer sufficient. "The Let's Get Ready! Initiative is a call for governors to demand better," he stated. "As the largest funders of education at the state level, we have a responsibility to drive innovation within our systems and prepare our students for workforce readiness, civic engagement, and well-being."

The Washington Post Editorial Board has commended the Let's Get Ready initiative for its efforts in redefining readiness and providing actionable solutions. Through an original review of state education practices and challenges, Let's Get Ready! identified four essential elements of student readiness: academic foundations, workforce preparedness, civic engagement, and lifelong well-being.
The Roadmap for Governors outlines specific action items in five categories: defining a vision for student readiness and assessing how states measure it; eliminating government silos that impede progress; building systems and infrastructure to measure outcomes; maintaining focus on outcomes with a public dashboard; and considering a more effective federal role in education.
The Roadmap serves as a starting point for important conversations about improving ways to define and measure readiness. To facilitate collaboration among governors across states, the NGA is launching a project to support the implementation of Roadmap priorities and the development of a dashboard to track outcomes.
Governor Polis and the NGA are committed to driving change and improving education systems for all learners, ultimately leading to a more competitive and successful nation. The full Roadmap can be accessed online, and interested individuals can visit the NGA's website for updates on next steps for Let's Get Ready.
