~ Colorado Springs - Local public works, utilities, and law enforcement officials came together last week at the 8th Street Project site to raise awareness about the importance of work zone safety. The event, held in recognition of National Work Zone Awareness Week from April 20-24, aimed to promote safe driving through work zones with this year's theme being "Safe actions save lives."
As construction activity increases across the city, residents can expect to encounter more work zones, lane shifts, and crews working near traffic. Clint Brown, Public Works Maintenance and Operations Manager, emphasized the risks that workers face daily while working just feet away from live traffic. He stated that drivers' choices directly impact the safety of these employees and urged drivers to slow down, stay alert, and give space.

The officials stressed that ensuring work zone safety is a shared responsibility. Drivers were reminded to follow posted signage, avoid distractions, and slow down while passing through work zones. Scott Hall, El Paso County Training Division Manager, highlighted the importance of consistency in work zones for drivers to know what to expect and respond safely.
Mike Cobb, Utility Support Services Manager for Colorado Springs Utilities, emphasized that work zones not only protect workers but also ensure essential services for the community. Law enforcement officials also reminded drivers that traffic laws are strictly enforced in work zones and unsafe driving behaviors can have serious consequences.
With multiple projects currently underway and more planned in the coming months, officials urged residents to plan ahead and expect delays when traveling through active construction areas.
