~ The City of Colorado Springs has announced plans to improve safety on Garden of the Gods Road through a median modification project. The project, set to begin on Monday, Oct. 13, will focus on the area just west of Interstate 25 and will also include traffic signal improvements east of the interstate.
According to city officials, the construction is expected to last six to eight weeks and will involve lane closures in the construction area from Chestnut Street to the I-25 interchange. During daytime hours, the center lane in each direction may also be closed, resulting in potential delays for motorists. Drivers are advised to watch for safety signage and changing conditions while traveling through this area.
One of the main goals of this project is to prevent accidents that often occur when motorists attempt to cross all six lanes of Garden of the Gods Road. In fact, between 2015 and 2020, there were a total of 47 traffic accidents in this specific area, with 16 resulting in injuries. The new medians will make it impossible for drivers to cross all six lanes, reducing the risk of accidents.

During construction, there will be several changes that drivers should be aware of. Firstly, motorists will not be able to make left turns from eastbound or westbound Garden of the Gods Road within the construction zone from Chestnut Street to I-25 interchange. Additionally, business access will only be available on a right-in, right-out basis and left turns from westbound Garden of the Gods Road at Chestnut Street will be reduced to one lane only.
After construction is complete, there will be further changes aimed at improving safety on Garden of the Gods Road. The lengthened medians will prevent motorists from crossing all six lanes and left turns into most businesses will be permitted. However, drivers exiting businesses will not be able to turn left onto Garden of the Gods Road.
The project is being funded by a $1.96 million contribution from the Colorado Department of Transportation, with additional support from the Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority. More information about the project can be found on the city's website at ColoradoSprings.gov/GOGmedians.
City officials are hopeful that this project will greatly improve safety on Garden of the Gods Road and reduce the number of accidents in the area. Motorists are advised to plan for potential delays and follow all safety precautions while traveling through the construction zone.
