~ Colorado Springs - The City's Public Works officials have announced that the completion date for the Galley Road Bridge replacement project has been pushed back to spring 2026. The project, which has faced several delays, was originally expected to be completed sooner.

According to officials, one of the main reasons for the delay was the relocation of sensitive fiber optic lines. This process took much longer than anticipated, stretching out to a year instead of the expected 3-4 months. Additionally, the contractor faced challenges in trying to accelerate the construction timeline, including early summer flooding and unexpected utility relocations.

As a result of these delays, Galley Road between East San Miguel Street and Moffat Circle remains closed. Drivers are advised to follow detour signs using North Murray Boulevard and Wooten Road to reach Palmer Park Boulevard or East Platte Avenue. However, access to nearby homes and businesses is still available. Customers of ENT Credit Union, located at 4545 Galley Road, should approach from the west while those visiting businesses at 4575 Galley Road can access them from the east.

In addition to this project, another nearby project is set to begin in early 2026 - the Galley Road and Wooten Road Culvert Rehabilitation. Unlike the bridge replacement project, this work will not completely close down the road. Crews will be focusing on fixing the top of a concrete culvert under the road that was built in 1970 and is now showing signs of wear and tear. This maintenance work is crucial in ensuring that structures like this last longer and also allows for safer pedestrian crossings with added sidewalks.

Richard Mulledy, Public Works Director for Colorado Springs, expressed sympathy for those impacted by the delays in the Galley Road bridge replacement project. He acknowledged that it has not gone as smoothly as they had hoped due to factors beyond their control. However, he assured residents that City officials are working to minimize travel disruptions for the upcoming Galley and Wooten Culvert Rehabilitation Project.

In the meantime, officials are urging people not to attempt to drive or walk through the construction area. This has been a recurring issue throughout the project, with heavy equipment and trucks operating near the bridge, making it unsafe for the public. The City is committed to completing these projects efficiently and safely for the benefit of all residents and visitors.
