~ Colorado Springs, CO- Saluting Branches, a national non-profit organization dedicated to honoring and recognizing U.S. veterans by beautifying their final resting places, has chosen Evergreen Cemetery as the host of its 10th annual day of service. The event will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 18 from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

A team of arborists from various local tree care companies will generously donate their time and resources to remove dead trees and branches around the cemetery. This event is considered the largest volunteer event in the tree care industry and will result in the closure of Evergreen Cemetery to visitors during the day.

Matt Puckett, forestry maintenance supervisor for Colorado Springs, expressed his gratitude towards Saluting Branches and the volunteers who will be dedicating their time to Evergreen Cemetery. He stated that this historic site holds great significance as it boasts an impressive inventory of over 3,000 trees and multiple veteran sites dating back to the Civil War. Puckett also mentioned that this event is particularly meaningful as it combines a love for arboriculture with a passion for honoring U.S veterans. He added that being a part of this day of service each year is a humbling experience, and he is always touched by the pride and camaraderie displayed amongst local arborists.

Established in 1871 shortly after Colorado Springs was founded, Evergreen Cemetery was deeded to the city in 1875 by city founder General William Jackson Palmer. Over time, it has grown from its original 10 acres to over 220 acres with more than 90,000 burials. The cemetery holds great historical significance as many of the city's pioneers are buried there, including American prospector and philanthropist Winfield Scott Stratton, poet Helen Hunt Jackson, and General William Jackson Palmer himself. In recognition of its historical value, Evergreen Cemetery was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993, making it only the second cemetery in the state to receive this honor.

Saluting Branches was originally created by Rainbow Treecare and is dedicated to honoring and recognizing veterans by organizing volunteer tree and landscape care for properties dedicated to them. For more information about this organization, visit SalutingBranches.org.

The 10th annual day of service at Evergreen Cemetery promises to be a meaningful and impactful event, as volunteers come together to honor the service of U.S veterans while beautifying this historic site.
