VOLYN UKRAINE ~ Last week, Governor Jared Polis of Colorado made a visit to the Volyn region in Ukraine to kick off the implementation of the Colorado Sister-State agreement. This agreement, which was signed in February 2026, aims to strengthen the relationship between Volyn and Colorado by promoting the exchange of best practices, technology, educational expertise, and culture.
During his visit, Governor Polis expressed his honor at being in Volyn and reaffirmed Colorado's support for Ukraine. He stated that the Sister-state agreement will further solidify the bond between the two regions and that working together will make them stronger. He also expressed his excitement for growing their sisterhood with Volyn.
Governor Polis met with several officials during his trip, including Roman Romaniuk, Acting Head of the Volyn Regional Military Administration; Denys Denyshchenko, Deputy Head of the Volyn Regional State Administration; and Olena Behal, Head of the Department of European Integration and International Cooperation at the Volyn Regional State Administration. The discussions focused on enhancing economic, trade, cultural, and diplomatic ties between Colorado and Ukraine.

The governor also took time to visit with veterans, local businesses, and students during his stay in Volyn. He even had the opportunity to tour the Museum of Modern Ukrainian Art of Korsaks. The museum showcases works from over 60 Ukrainian artists in its 15 halls.
At Lutsk National Technical University's Technical Professional College, Governor Polis engaged with students and educators to learn more about their educational system. Colorado currently has only one other sister state agreement with Yamagata prefecture in Japan under former Governor Roy Romer. Later this year, they will welcome Yamagata's governor and her delegation to further strengthen their cultural ties, industry collaboration, and tourism promotion.
These sister state agreements are crucial in building warm cultural ties and promoting understanding between Colorado and other regions across the globe. With the implementation of the Colorado Sister-State agreement with Volyn, both regions can look forward to a mutually beneficial relationship that will continue to grow in the years to come.
