Colorado Springs: City to observe Juneteenth Thursday

~ As the nation prepares to celebrate Juneteenth, a holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States, the City of Colorado Springs has announced closures for various administrative and elected offices and agencies on Thursday, June 19.

According to a press release from the city, the following facilities will be closed in observance of Juneteenth: Administrative offices for Mountain Metropolitan Transit, City Administration Building, City Auditorium, City Clerk, City Hall, Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum, Deerfield, Hillside, Meadows Park and Westside Community Centers, Municipal Court, Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services Administrative Building, Rock Ledge Ranch Historic Site, Sales Tax Office, Sports Office at Memorial Park and Therapeutic Recreation Program at Westside Community Center.

However, some facilities will remain open for normal business hours unless otherwise noted. Evergreen and Fairview cemeteries will have their gates open for visitors but their offices will be closed. Garden of the Gods Park will be open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., while Helen Hunt Falls Visitor Center will operate from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

For golf enthusiasts, Patty Jewett and Valley Hi golf courses will be open weather permitting. The courses will open at 6:30 a.m. with the last tee time being approximately four hours before sunset for 18-holes and two and a half hours before sunset for nine-holes. The Patty Jewett Bar & Grill will also be open for indoor dining from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., as well as CADDIE'S at Valley Hi.

Pikes Peak – America's Mountain – will also remain open weather permitting with gates opening at 7:30 a.m. However, the Pikes Peak Summit closes at 7 p.m. and downhill gate closes at 8 p.m. For those planning to visit Pikes Peak, tickets are required and the price includes a One-Day Admission Pass. Additionally, a $2 Timed-Entry Permit is required for vehicles traveling past Mile 7 on the Pikes Peak Highway.

Recreationalists heading to North Slope Recreation Area must also purchase a Daily $1 Parking Permit in addition to an NSRA One-Day Admission Pass. Lastly, Starsmore Visitor and Nature Center will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

As the city takes time to honor and reflect on the significance of Juneteenth, residents are encouraged to plan their activities accordingly and take note of the closures and operating hours of various facilities.
