Colorado Springs: #1910-011 Traffic Fatality

On October 8, 2019, at approximately 1:18 P.M., the Colorado Springs Police Department was notified of a crash involving an automobile and a bicycle at the intersection of North Chelton Road and Chelton Circle. The driver of the bicycle, 62-year-old Craig T. Hanson of Colorado Springs was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in this crash. Mr. Hanson, who was not wearing a protective helmet subsequently died as a result of those injuries on October 10, 2019.

The investigation revealed that Mr. Hanson was riding his bike in the southbound lane of North Chelton Road when the driver of a Hyundai sedan attempted a left turn from eastbound Chelton Circle onto northbound North Chelton Road. Mr. Hanson's bicycle struck the left front fender of the Hyundai. The driver of the Hyundai was not impaired and was charged with Careless Driving Resulting in Death.

Mr. Hanson was the 34th traffic related death in Colorado Springs this year and the second bicycle related death of 2019.
