DENVER ~ As the state of Colorado braces for potential job cuts in the federal workforce, the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment (CDLE) is stepping up to offer support to those affected. With approximately 57,000 federal workers in Colorado, many may be eligible for various resources through the Statewide Workforce System.
Governor Jared Polis expressed his commitment to helping impacted federal workers during this challenging time. "The State of Colorado is prepared to support Coloradans impacted by federal job cuts," he stated. "Colorado's strong economy is supported by a dedicated state workforce, and I encourage impacted federal workers to join us in building a Colorado For All."
CDLE Executive Director Joe Barela also emphasized the department's readiness to assist those facing potential joblessness. "Together with the Statewide Workforce System and our Unemployment Insurance Division, we are prepared to help Colorado's skilled and competent federal workforce navigate any potential period of joblessness," he said. "CDLE is committed to supporting individuals with a variety of workforce development support to ensure all Coloradans can continue to thrive and prosper."

The CDLE website has information available for impacted federal workers regarding reemployment support and unemployment insurance. Those who have been affected can file their claims online at coloradoui.gov.
However, it should be noted that if a federal worker continues to receive payment from their employer related to a resignation, they will need to report this income and may not be eligible for unemployment benefit payments during those weeks. To address this issue, impacted workers can upload a copy of the letter they received about the Deferred Resignation during the claim filing process.
In addition, all workers experiencing a period of joblessness are encouraged to take advantage of the resources and programs offered through the Statewide Workforce System. This includes personal job search support and coaching, resume development, interview preparation, as well as various activities such as job fairs, hiring events, workshops, and training opportunities.
For those looking for employment, Connecting Colorado, the state's labor exchange, currently has over 60,000 job openings posted. The State of Colorado also has nearly 500 open positions at various state agencies and institutions. Federal workers are encouraged to explore career opportunities with the state and consider the benefits offered, such as PERA retirement benefits, medical and dental plans, paid holidays and leave, and work-life programs.

For those who are eligible for unemployment benefits, there is a mandatory one-week waiting period before a claim is activated. Workers may not file their claim until their last day of work. To assist new UI claimants, CDLE's Unemployment Insurance Division has several resources available including a UI Claimant Guide that outlines the entire process, a Quick Guide for easy reference, and information on maintaining eligibility for benefits.
Most of the claim process can be completed through MyUI+, which now includes a claim status tracker for individuals to monitor the progress of their claim. For additional assistance, claimants can contact the Unemployment Insurance Division.
As Colorado prepares to support its federal workforce during this time of potential job cuts and layoffs, CDLE is dedicated to providing resources and assistance to ensure all Coloradans can continue to thrive in their careers.
