Colorado: Lt. Governor Primavera Issues Verbal Disaster Declaration For Sheep Head Fire in Huerfano County

DENVER ~ In a swift response to the ongoing Big Sheep Fire in Huerfano County, Lt. Governor Dianne Primavera has issued a verbal disaster declaration today. As acting Governor under the Colorado Constitution, Article IV, § 13, Lt. Governor Primavera holds the authority to take such action.

The declaration activates the State Emergency Operations Plan and directs the Department of Public Safety and its Divisions of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHSEM) and Fire Prevention and Control (DFPC) to take charge of all response, recovery, and mitigation efforts for the fire.

With 1,148 acres already burned and no containment in sight, the Lt. Governor has also authorized the mobilization of the Colorado National Guard to support fire response efforts. This move comes as a crucial step in containing and extinguishing the raging flames of the Big Sheep Fire.
