DENVER ~ Denver, CO - Lt. Governor Dianne Primavera and Director of the Office of Saving People Money on Health Care visited George Washington High School today to gain a deeper understanding of the vital role school-based health centers play in supporting students and communities. The visit was attended by a diverse group including a student, school staff, representatives from Denver Health and Denver Public Schools, the Youth Healthcare Alliance, and Senator Janice Marchman and Representative Emily Sirota.
During her visit, Lt. Governor Primavera emphasized the Polis-Primavera administration's commitment to breaking down barriers to healthcare. She praised the collaboration between various organizations that make these centers possible and highlighted their importance in providing convenient access to essential care for students and staff.
Since taking office, the Polis-Primavera administration has made significant strides in reducing healthcare costs in Colorado. The creation of Reinsurance and Colorado Option has allowed Coloradans to access insurance coverage outside of their employers while saving money. Additionally, initiatives such as the Prescription Drug Affordability Board and capping insulin costs at $100 per month have helped residents save money on prescription drugs. The state is also seeking a waiver from the federal government to import lower-cost prescription drugs from Canada. These efforts have made Colorado a national leader in increasing access to healthcare while lowering costs.

Earlier this year, Governor Jared Polis signed SB24-034 into law, expanding the eligible uses for grants at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) that support school-based health centers to include school-linked health services. Currently, these grants fund 59 operating SBHCs and four planning sites throughout Colorado. The SBHC Program also collaborates with other state agencies and grant programs to expand the range of services available at these centers.

Governor Primavera highlights the importance of school-based health centers in providing essential care for students while also addressing larger issues of healthcare accessibility and affordability in Colorado. With the support of the Polis-Primavera administration, these centers are playing a crucial role in improving the overall health and well-being of communities across the state.
