DENVER ~ Denver, CO - Governor Jared Polis of Colorado released a statement today congratulating and celebrating the historic inauguration of Claudia Sheinbaum as the first female president of Mexico. President Sheinbaum's vision for Mexico includes safe communities, job opportunities, and support for families.
Governor Polis expressed his excitement to continue strengthening the partnership between Colorado and Mexico in terms of agriculture and trade. In 2023, Colorado exported $1.6 billion to Mexico and imported $1.2 billion from the country, making it one of Colorado's top trade partners. Mexico accounts for 16% of Colorado's export trade and is the state's third largest import partner.
Over the past five years, investments from Colorado companies in Mexico have resulted in $69 million in capital expenditure and created 447 jobs. Agriculture also plays a significant role in the relationship between Colorado and Mexico. In 2021, Governor Polis praised a decision by the Mexican Supreme Court to lift a barrier on imports of U.S. fresh potatoes, including those from Colorado.
