DENVER ~ In a joint effort to protect the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Governor Jared Polis of Colorado joined forces with 22 other governors, including North Carolina Governor Josh Stein, to urge Congress not to cut funding for the program and shift the responsibility onto states. The letter was signed by a diverse group of governors, including Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs, California Governor Gavin Newsom, and New York Governor Kathy Hochul.
Governor Polis emphasized the importance of SNAP in providing food access for hundreds of thousands of Coloradans. He stated that these proposed cuts would not only harm families and communities but also strain state budgets even further. This call to action builds upon Governor Polis' previous efforts in advocating against SNAP cuts by bringing together a coalition of agriculture and hunger organizations.
According to data from 2024, almost one million individuals in Colorado received SNAP benefits, with half being children and ten percent being older Americans. The program injects over $486 million into the economy through wages for over ten thousand jobs in various sectors such as farming, grocery stores, and food supply chain positions. Additionally, over 21,000 grocery stores in Colorado accept SNAP benefits, generating almost $70 million in state tax revenue from increased economic activity.

The letter signed by the 23 governors from across the country highlights the critical role that SNAP plays in addressing hunger and improving overall health while helping people overcome poverty. With more than 42 million people relying on this program for food assistance nationwide, any cuts or changes could have severe consequences.
Governor Polis' efforts have been met with support from various organizations such as Hunger Free Colorado, Colorado Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association, and Feeding Colorado. These groups recognize the vital role that SNAP plays in providing food security for individuals and families in need.
As Congress continues to debate funding for SNAP, these governors are urging them to consider the impact on vulnerable populations and local economies. The future of SNAP remains uncertain, but with the support of these governors and organizations, there is hope that the program will continue to provide essential food assistance for those in need.
